Algebra AEC evaluated data collected from sensors they installed on each exhaust fan and MAU in an effort to determine when the building was in a negative vs. positive air balance. The sensors trended the power consumption of equipment ever second.
AAEC computed whether the building was positive or negative, and also assigned it as occurring either during the school year or summer break. AAEC calculated the distribution of time that the building was in negative or positive air balance during business hours. The readings showed that the think[box] was in positive air balance more than 98% of the time during summer. However, during the school year that rate was reduced to approximately 86% of the time in positive air balance. In contrast, during the summer the building was in negative air balance for approximately 1% of the time. However, during the school year, [think]box was in negative balance more than 14% of the time.
The installation of a new DOAS unit to balance the building was not necessary for the state of operations at the time. The intervals the building was showing up as negative was for relatively short bursts of time. It was more prudent and cost effective to address the building overall air balance issues when the 1st floor, and final phase, of the think[box] is fit-out. The best solution for the problem was to right-size the Nederman exhaust fans, and incorporate an appropriate amount of makeup air from the air handling unit installed during the 1st floor fit-out.
